I am reaching out to you with some updated information regarding the respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus, COVID-19. At this time, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Polk County. However, several cases have been reported in other counties in Iowa.
Polk County has been working collaboratively with the Iowa Department of Health, and is closely monitoring the situation while leading a coordinated effort to prevent and respond to the COVID-19 virus.
We are very appreciative to the Polk County Health and Emergency Management Departments for leading Polk County’s efforts to keep citizens informed of preventative measures and current information. We would like to share this information with you.

Tips to preventative or minimize a respiratory illness like COVID-19:
- If you are sick with a fever of 100.4 degrees, stay home.
- Cover your mouth with your upper arm or a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Polk County Health Services has evaluated our readiness, as I am sure your leadership teams have as well. We will be looking at upcoming meetings to evaluate need and ability to meet virtually.
