Donate items to help domestic violence survivors

April 25, 2018, Des Moines, Iowa – On Saturday, May 12, community members are invited to donate gently used household items during the FreeStore’s eleventh annual “Fill the Mayflower” event. Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., individuals are able to drop off their items at the corner of Valley West Drive and Westown Parkway in the designated collection area of the parking lot at Valley West Mall.

The FreeStore is partnering with Children & Families of Iowa (CFI), Valley West Mall and Select Van and Storage to provide essential items to domestic violence victims in need of household goods. Items needed include: twin and bunk beds, vacuum cleaners, sheets and blankets (any size), lamps, microwaves, kitchen items, and other small household appliances and furniture. Cash donations are also welcome. Please note, the FreeStore is unable to accept large furniture items at this event.

Established in 2001 as an outreach program by St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church of West Des Moines, the FreeStore is a 501c(3) organization that provides free household items and furniture to victims and survivors of domestic violence. In the last ten years the FreeStore has provided over 2,100 families with furniture and household items. On average, approximately $2,600 worth of furniture is provided to each family served.
