July 13, 2015, Des Moines, Iowa – Nationwide Foundation recently awarded Children & Families of Iowa (CFI) with two grants totaling $120,000 to ensure safety for victims of domestic violence.
A grant award of $65,000 will help provide resources to domestic violence survivors. CFI operates the largest domestic violence shelter in Iowa and the only one in Polk County. Last year, more than 5,500 victims, including 319 children, received support from these services.
“Nationwide is a strong supporter of the important mission at Children & Families of Iowa because we believe in supporting the communities where we live, work and do business,” said Chad Jester, vice-president, Nationwide. “Providing a pathway to safety and a supportive environment for victims of domestic abuse is critical to the health and wellbeing of the community. We appreciate the tremendous work that is taking place on this issue in Iowa and proud to support it.”
The second award, totaling $55,000, will provide needed security updates to CFI’s domestic violence shelter and transitional housing complex. Both facilities serve victims of domestic violence. These updates are crucial to the safety of CFI’s clients, as the intensity of abuse increases at the time of a victim’s attempted departure or immediately following. This is when victims are at their greatest risk for serious harm. CFI takes considerable precautions to protect and prepare survivors for a violent-free future.
“Domestic violence has a devastating impact on victims and on the children who witness abuse happening in their home,” says Amy Stapp-Arpy, CFI’s Chief Development Officer/Vice President of Development & Communications. “With help from organizations like Nationwide, we are able to give domestic violence victims the resources they need to break free from the control of their abusers and build new lives.”
