Des Moines, Iowa – Children & Families of Iowa’s (CFI) Cornerstone Recovery Program is pleased to offer two new educational programs separately targeting young adults (18-20 years old) and adolescents (12-17 years old).

The programs are designed to interrupt the progression of alcohol and substance abuse at its very earliest stage, before chronic use or dependence has occurred. Twice weekly sessions combine powerful self-assessment with a persuasion-based approach to promote change through the use of a variety of delivery methods to engage participants and maximize learning potential.

“These education programs are a good opportunity for youth to receive information on alcohol and drug use which will assist them in making positive life choices in the future,” says Amber Rand, Cornerstone Recovery Program Supervisor. “In addition, parents will receive information on identifying early warning signs.”

Cornerstone’s new programs are offered weekly in Ankeny, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The adult program meets from 6-9 p.m., focuses on alcohol abuse, and requires 12 hours of program participation to receive a certificate of completion and fulfill the legal obligations of a Minor-In-Possession of Alcohol charge for ages 18-20. The adolescent program meets from 5-8 p.m. and includes illegal substance use as well, requires (2) three hour sessions for completion, as well as parent/caregiver participation during a portion of the class.

Referrals for class participation may come from parents, the Juvenile Court System, school counselors or physicians. To make a referral, schedule a session, or for more information, visit www.cfiowa.org, or contact Brandy Schoelerman at [phone](515) 289-2272[/phone], ext. 200.
