Des Moines, Iowa – Children & Families of Iowa has received a grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity for upgrades and improvements to the food service kitchen at the Lou Williams/ Variety Child Development Center, located on Forest Avenue in the Des Moines Metro.
Founded in 1888, Children & Families of Iowa (CFI) is a nonprofit organization serving 97 of the 99 counties of Iowa. CFI provides services focusing primarily on domestic violence, mental health, family support, youth resources, work readiness, substance abuse and early childhood development. CFI serves at-risk individuals, children, and families, specializing in care for those who have been abused, neglected, experienced trauma, or are struggling in everyday life. The child development center provides quality childcare to families in need of care outside the home, serving children ranging from two weeks to ten years of age. In addition to traditional childcare, the child development center provides school-age care as well as a therapeutic childcare program for children that require social, emotional, and behavioral accommodations.
Through the support of Variety, the child development center will be able to update appliances and purchase additional ADA compliant tables. The child development center provides an average of 32,000 meals and snacks to children who attend the center annually.
“The support of Variety helps us fulfill our mission of restoring hope, building futures, and changing lives for those we serve that attend the Lou Williams/ Variety Child Development Center and experience food insecurity. This funding is vitally important as early childhood development and nutrition lay the foundation of a successful and healthy life,” said Janice Lane Schroeder, CEO of CFI.
